Manhattan-Based Psychotherapist

I’ve been a practicing clinician for over thirty years with post masters training in family systems and couples treatment. I’ve worked with teens in outpatient rehab settings and run programs for parents of all ages. Having gotten married after 40, I’m also keenly aware that things happen at different times for different people.  
 
In addition to running a widows and widowers group at the 92nd Street Y, I’m the author of the book How to Survive the Loss of a Parent.

What I've learned in working with a broad range of clients, including the ones dealing with loss, is that moving from one phase of life to another is challenging for all of us. I often tell people the greatest gift you can give someone is the idea they can survive something emotionally. Whether it’s a sudden death, a break-up, a birth, or a move to a new city, transitions affect us. Much like a work out session, your emotional muscles need time to recover from these experiences. How quickly, is a sign of health. We need emotions. They're healthy. Even fear and anxiety are helpful when they protect us from making poor choices. But when they get in the way of living a full life that's different.
 
It’s human nature to see things from one point of view. In treatment, I’ll encourage you to examine your challenges from many angles to get at what’s interfering with your personal goals. I truly believe in therapy and its capacity to improve a person’s life. I feel honored to participate in the process. It isn’t easy to risk sharing vulnerable feelings, and I hold the experience sacred. Therapy strengthens your ability to notice thoughts and actions. It helps you ask the important questions. Do you feel you have the freedom to do the things you want to do? Do you have the life you want? If the answer is no, together, we’ll try to figure out what’s getting in your way. ​

We begin with a one hour consultation. I'll describe how I work and you'll tell me what's bringing you to therapy. If we agree it's a fit we'll set up an appointment for our next session. I look forward to speaking with you.
